It was last year when I visited the city of angels with a gregarious mien. Aged 23 and determined to create a print magazine entitled Nevermind and subtitled A Tribute To Underground California.*
On a balmy summer afternoon, I found myself under the tangerine skies of Venice beach.
I watched as rainbow glares and kaleidoscopic hues rippled from the surf-centric scene and the sounds of skate and grind rode the airwaves. I watched as the almond-skinned hunks collided with the Beastie Boys and hypnotised my world. And I watched as my adolescent love affair with surf and skate culture propelled to new levels.
It took less than a second to fall in love with this way of life. I felt alive. And this SoCal explosion of thrills and spills and eternal sunshine brightened my dour face. This is Venice Beach, LA – because I miss that home turf. █

[*Nevermind LA was created as part of my Final Major Project at University. It was an ode to the Cali-flavoured arts and music scene. It was shortlisted in the Top 10 for the Drapers award at GFW British and International Awards.]
